The Five Pillars of Islam

The five pillars are the framework of Muslim practice, the core acts of worship that every Muslim is expected to uphold.

1

Shahada

Testimony of Faith

لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ

La ilaha illallah Muhammadun rasoolullah

There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His messenger.

The declaration that establishes a person as Muslim, affirming that Allah alone is worthy of worship and that Muhammad ﷺ is His final messenger. Sincerely believing and pronouncing it is the foundation everything else is built on.

2

Salah

Prayer

The five daily prayers are Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha, performed at set times throughout the day. Salah is a direct connection between the worshipper and Allah, and it shapes the daily rhythm of a Muslim's life.

3

Zakah

Almsgiving

An obligatory portion of a Muslim's wealth given to those in need, calculated annually once savings exceed a set threshold (nisab). Zakah purifies wealth and redistributes it within the community, rather than being simple charity alone.

Sawm

Fasting

5

Hajj

Pilgrimage

The pilgrimage to Makkah, required once in a lifetime for every Muslim who is physically and financially able to make the journey. Millions of Muslims from around the world gather there each year during the pilgrimage season.
